Pokémon Prerelease Events in the UK: How They Work

Published · Updated · 6 min read · Checked against 7 dated sources

A prerelease is a casual tournament at a local game store, held in the run-up to a new set's release, where you play with the new cards early. You buy a Build & Battle Box (four booster packs plus a ready-to-play 40-card deck and one foil promo), add cards from your packs, and play games with four Prize cards instead of six. For Delta Reign, Build & Battle Boxes go on sale at select Play! Pokémon stores from 24 October 2026, ahead of the set's 6 November 2026 release.

What is a Pokémon prerelease?

A Pokémon prerelease is an in-store event at a Play! Pokémon store, held before a new expansion reaches the shops. Everyone builds a deck from the same kind of kit, the Build & Battle Box, and plays a few relaxed rounds. You keep the cards. It is the earliest way to open the new set and a friendly first tournament for new players.

Prereleases are run as Limited events: you build only from what you get at the event, not from your own collection. That makes them fair for beginners, because nobody can bring a deck they spent months perfecting.

When is the Delta Reign prerelease in the UK?

What is in a Build & Battle Box?

For Delta Reign, each Build & Battle Box contains four Delta Reign booster packs, a ready-to-play 40-card deck and one of four foil promo cards: Masquerain, Magmortar, Enamorus or Kommo-o. You do not choose which promo you get, which is why people trade them at the event.

The deck is the base you play with. You open your four packs, swap in any new cards you want, and keep the deck at 40 cards. Our product types guide explains how the Build & Battle Box compares with an Elite Trainer Box or a booster bundle.

How do prerelease games work?

Prerelease games use a smaller format than normal play: 40-card decks and four Prize cards instead of 60 cards and six Prizes, so games are quicker. Because you can only use what is in your kit, the usual limit of four copies of a card with the same name does not apply. Your deck must still include at least one Basic Pokémon.

  • Rounds: events are usually a few short rounds, often three. Some stores award extra booster packs for taking part or for wins; ask your store what it does.
  • Energy: ask whether the store provides basic Energy cards for deck-building or whether you should bring your own.
  • Pace: prereleases are meant to be relaxed. If you are unsure of a rule, ask the organiser.
  • Trading: expect people to trade promos and pulls between rounds. Only trade what you are happy to part with.

How do I find a prerelease near me in the UK?

Start with your nearest independent game or card shop: prereleases are only run by Play! Pokémon stores, not supermarkets or toy chains. The official Play! Pokémon event locator lists many events, but stores submit their own details and Video Games Chronicle notes the list "is not exhaustive or complete", so a store may run one without appearing there.

  1. 1.

    Ask your local shop

Phone, check its website or social media, or ask at the counter. Places are limited, so book early if the store takes bookings.

  2. 2.

    Check the event locator

Search the official Play! Pokémon event locator for prerelease events near your postcode. Treat it as a starting point, not a complete list.

  3. 3.

Create a free Play! Pokémon account

Video Games Chronicle notes you need a Trainer ID to attend, which is free from the Play! Pokémon website when you create or sign in to an account. Set it up before the day.

  4. 4.

    Book and confirm

Confirm the date, start time, entry fee and whether the fee includes the Build & Battle Box. Ask whether there are age divisions or a junior event if you are going with children.

What should I bring to a prerelease?

  • Your Trainer ID (or the login details for your Play! Pokémon account).
  • Card sleeves for your 40-card deck, plus a few penny sleeves and a toploader for any card you want to keep safe. Our storage guide explains which to buy.
  • Damage counters and a coin or die, if you have them. Many people use a phone app, but check the store allows it.
  • A pen, for match slips.
  • Patience and good manners: many players are at their first event.

Is a prerelease worth it if I just collect?

Yes, if you enjoy opening packs. A prerelease gives you the new set before release day, a promo card you cannot get in booster packs, and the chance to trade with other local collectors. If you only want a specific card, buying the single is usually the surer route: browse our single cards once the set is out.

Already have spare cards from past prereleases you no longer want? We buy cards: see sell your cards. Sealed product for the new set appears on our sealed page when it is in stock.
