Pokémon TCG Products Explained: ETB, Booster Box & More

Published · Updated · 9 min read · Checked against 13 dated sources

A booster pack has 10 cards. A Booster Bundle is 6 packs. An Elite Trainer Box (ETB) is 9 packs plus sleeves, energy, dice and a promo card (11 packs in the Pokémon Center version). A booster box (display) is 36 packs (18 in a half display, sold in Europe). Blisters, tins and collection boxes add promo cards to anything from 1 to 18 packs, sometimes from older sets. A Build & Battle Box is the prerelease kit: 4 packs and a ready-made 40-card deck. Pick by what you want: pulls, play, or a display piece.

Pokémon TCG sealed products all come down to booster packs plus extras. The extras, and how many packs you get, are what change. This guide covers the products in the current Mega Evolution series of English sets, which began with Mega Evolution in autumn 2025 (released in Europe, including the UK, on 10 October 2025 after a delivery delay) and continued with Phantasmal Flames, Ascended Heroes, Perfect Order, Chaos Rising, Pitch Black and 30th Celebration. Delta Reign is due on 6 November 2026. Our release calendar tracks dates.

What are the main Pokémon TCG product types?

Everything sealed is booster packs plus extras. A pack has 10 cards, a Booster Bundle 6 packs, an Elite Trainer Box 9 packs with accessories and a promo, and a booster box 36 packs. Blisters, tins and collection boxes add promo cards to between 1 and 18 packs. The table compares them.

What is in a Pokémon booster pack?

A standard English booster pack has 10 game cards plus a Basic Energy and a Pokémon TCG Live code card. Since Scarlet & Violet, every card of Rare or higher is holofoil. Bulbapedia lists the usual layout as four Commons, three Uncommons, two Reverse Holo slots (either of which can be replaced by a higher rarity), and one rare slot (Rare, Double Rare or Ultra Rare). Our rarity guide explains the symbols.

Some packs are sold in a branded paper sleeve, which Bulbapedia says is common at major physical retailers. The pack inside is the same.

What is a Pokémon blister pack?

Blisters are packs in a plastic shell with extras. A single-pack (checklane) blister is one pack, a promo card and a coin. A three-pack blister is three packs and a promo card, sometimes with a coin. Most main sets also get Premium Checklane Blisters, which add reprinted cards of an evolution line (for Pitch Black, Gengar or Luxray lines reprinted from Perfect Order). Two-pack blisters, such as the Zarude Two Pack Blister, often pair packs from two different sets. Check the front of the packaging so you know which packs are inside.

What is a Pokémon Booster Bundle?

A Booster Bundle is six booster packs in one package, with no other extras. Bulbapedia describes it as a "mid-range option between smaller blister products and full Booster Boxes". Booster Bundles exist for main sets and for special sets such as Ascended Heroes and 30th Celebration. If you just want packs, a bundle is usually the simplest buy.

What is in a Pokémon Elite Trainer Box?

An Elite Trainer Box is the most popular all-in-one product: nine booster packs plus a full-art promo card and the accessories a player needs, including sleeves, Energy cards, dice, a coin and a storage box with dividers. For the Mega Evolution era, Bulbapedia lists the standard ETB as:

  • 9 booster packs (since Scarlet & Violet)
  • 1 full-art promo card (for Pitch Black: Zarude)
  • 65 card sleeves
  • 40 Basic Energy cards (down from 45 in earlier ETBs)
  • 6 damage-counter dice and 1 competition-legal coin-flip die
  • A coin (added from Mega Evolution onwards)
  • A player's guide, a code card and a storage box with 6 dividers (up from 4)

Mega Evolution-era ETBs no longer include the two Special Condition markers that earlier ETBs had. Many guides still list the old contents.

Pokémon Center ETB

The Pokémon Center version, sold through the official Pokémon Center online store, has 11 packs instead of 9 and a second promo card stamped with the Pokémon Center logo.

What is a Pokémon booster box?

A booster box, called a Booster Display on the packaging, holds 36 booster packs. For each main Mega Evolution set so far, Bulbapedia records half displays of 18 packs sold in European countries alongside the 36-pack box. The first Mega Evolution set also had an Enhanced Booster Display with a stamped bonus Bulbasaur card. Booster boxes are rarely made for special sets, so for those (Ascended Heroes, 30th Celebration) packs come mainly in ETBs, bundles, tins and collections.

What is a Build & Battle Box?

Build & Battle Boxes are the kits used at prerelease events, run by shops and leagues in the Play! Pokémon Prerelease Program, usually on the two weekends before a set's release. Each box has 4 booster packs, a deck-building tip sheet, a code card and a 40-card deck. From Mega Evolution onwards that deck is "completely predetermined and built around the included promotional card", rather than semi-random. You add cards from your packs and play.

Delta Reign prerelease events and Build & Battle Boxes start from 24 October 2026, ahead of the set's release on 6 November. Your local game shop will have exact dates and entry fees — see our prerelease guide.

What are Pokémon tins and collection boxes?

They are gift-style products built around promo cards. Mini tins usually hold two packs, standard tins four packs and a promo, and collection boxes a promo or two with a handful of packs. Premium and Ultra-Premium Collections add more packs and accessories. Always check which sets the packs come from.

  • Mini tins: for example, Ascended Heroes mini tins contain two booster packs, a sticker and an art card.
  • Tins: typically a promo card and four booster packs (for example, the Ascended Heroes Tins).
  • Collection boxes: promo cards (sometimes oversized) with a handful of packs. For example, the Ascended Heroes Collection has a promo, two packs and a coin.
  • Premium and Ultra-Premium Collections: larger boxes with more packs and accessories. The Mega Charizard X ex Ultra-Premium Collection (November 2025) has 18 booster packs from several Scarlet & Violet and Mega Evolution sets, a playmat, a deck box, 65 sleeves, a metal coin and six damage-counter dice.
  • Poster collections: a poster, one or more promo cards and packs: three in the 30th Celebration Poster Collection, ten in the Ascended Heroes Premium Poster Collections.

Which Pokémon TCG decks suit new players?

Battle Decks are the usual starting point: ready-to-play 60-card decks with a rules booklet, playmat, damage counters, coin and deck box. League Battle Decks are tournament-style decks for more experienced players, and the Trainer's Toolkit is a box of accessories and a few packs for deck-builders.

  • Battle Decks (for example the Mega Battle Decks) are ready-to-play 60-card decks with a rules booklet, playmat, damage counters, coin and deck box. A good first step for new players.
  • League Battle Decks are tournament-style decks aimed at more experienced players, with a deck box, condition markers, damage-counter dice and a coin-flip die.
  • Trainer's Toolkit is a box of accessories and a few packs for deck-builders: the 2025 edition had four packs, 65 sleeves, dice, a coin-flip die and condition markers.

Which Pokémon TCG product should I buy?

Buy for what you want. A Battle Deck or Elite Trainer Box suits a new player, a Booster Bundle or booster box suits opening, a blister or collection suits a particular promo, and a booster box or ETB suits keeping sealed. For one specific card, buying the single is cheaper and certain.
